Grateful or Self-Interested? | The Dinner After Lazarus Was Raised | John Giftah | Christian Sermon
Tonight's Episode
What happens after the miracle? In John 12, after JESUS raised Lazarus from the dead, a dinner was prepared in His honor. It was a moment of gratitude and recognition for what the Lord had done.
But in the very same chapter, another scene unfolds.
Mary pours an expensive perfume on JESUS as an act of worship. Judas immediately complains about the cost. Interestingly, he didn’t complain about the feast they were all enjoying — but he objected when an act of devotion didn’t benefit him personally.
This episode explores a challenging question for believers:
Do we honor GOD only when we benefit from it?
Or are we willing to worship and honor Him even when there is nothing in it for us?
This message will help you:
• Reflect on your gratitude after receiving blessings
• Examine the motives behind your worship
• Understand the difference between genuine devotion and self-interest
• Learn to honor JESUS beyond personal benefit
Miracles should lead to worship — not forgetfulness.

Speaker 1: Welcome to Fuel for the Soul with John Gifta.
Speaker 2: Hello everyone, Welcome to this solution of the Fuel for
Speaker 2: the Soul with John Gifta podcast. Today, I'm going to
Speaker 2: talk about something I believe is very important for us
Speaker 2: to take note of from John chapter twelve. Here's the thing.
Speaker 2: This is a chapter right after John chapter eleven. Jesus
Speaker 2: raised lasses back to life, and in honor of that,
Speaker 2: they have decided to give a dinner. This is what
Speaker 2: it says in verse too. Here a dinner was given
Speaker 2: in Jesus's honor. See, I want you to understand something here.
Speaker 2: A lot of times when we get the miracle, we
Speaker 2: are like, oh wow, thank you Jesus, and then we forget.
Speaker 2: But here's an example of how after the miracle they
Speaker 2: wanted to honor Jesus with a dinner. You know, I
Speaker 2: want to ask you this question. You've been waiting for
Speaker 2: the miracle, You've been praying for the breakthrough. You've been
Speaker 2: you know, asking the Lord to show up and show
Speaker 2: up in a certain area of your life, and then
Speaker 2: finally got showed up, finally got to the unthinkable, finally
Speaker 2: got to a miracle. My question is after that, what
Speaker 2: did you do? Did you honor him? Did you say
Speaker 2: thank you to the Lord? Did you have like a
Speaker 2: thanksgiving program or a service? That's exactly what they did.
Speaker 2: Right now. I'm not saying go and trumpet it to
Speaker 2: the whole world in a sense of show being like
Speaker 2: a show off, But what I'm saying is having that
Speaker 2: attitude of gratitude and expressing that gratefulness in the best
Speaker 2: way possible. And here's the thing. When they were doing
Speaker 2: this is when Mary comes in and pours the expensive
Speaker 2: perfume on Jesus' feet and the whole place is filled
Speaker 2: with a fragrance, and Judas carry it comes out and says,
Speaker 2: why wasn't this perfume sold and money given to the poor?
Speaker 2: It was worth a year's wages. And the Bible also
Speaker 2: says in verse six, he did not say this because
Speaker 2: he cared for the poor, but because he was a
Speaker 2: thief as keeper of the money bag, he used to
Speaker 2: help himself with what was put in it. Here's the
Speaker 2: thing I wanted to understand something. Here. Judas was now
Speaker 2: sitting in this dinner, this feast, this great program. Now,
Speaker 2: he did not say, why you spending money on giving this? Now?
Speaker 2: Why are you doing this? You could just give all
Speaker 2: the money to the poor. He didn't say that. He
Speaker 2: was enjoying the food in the dinner, and then he's
Speaker 2: complaining about maybe giving this perfume or pourting the perfume
Speaker 2: out on Jesus. Here's the thing, here's the thing I
Speaker 2: wanted to understand. Sometimes you would have noticed about people, right,
Speaker 2: they're okay with something as long as they get something
Speaker 2: out of it. Like Judas was also enjoying the meal
Speaker 2: in the feast. Right, that's why he was. He was
Speaker 2: not complaining about the meal. Right, if his intention was
Speaker 2: save all the money and give it to the poor,
Speaker 2: if it was genuine, you wouldn't even come, I mean,
Speaker 2: like to a feast. He would have said, guys, don't
Speaker 2: don't give to the feast, okay, like, don't spend money
Speaker 2: on that. Give all that money to the poor. You know,
Speaker 2: he would have said that. But here's the thing. He
Speaker 2: enjoyed the feast. He enjoyed the food and the you know,
Speaker 2: this dinner that was laid out for Jesus. He enjoyed
Speaker 2: all of this. And then when he realized that the
Speaker 2: perfume was something he could not enjoy it was only
Speaker 2: for Jesus. He had a problem with it. You see,
Speaker 2: some people have this attitude where they're okay as long
Speaker 2: as they get something out of it, but the minute
Speaker 2: they realize that they don't benefit out of it, they
Speaker 2: have a problem. You get know what I'm saying. They
Speaker 2: have a problem. And there's so many things we can unpack.
Speaker 2: I've thought so many things about this passage, and I
Speaker 2: want to talk more about it than the days to come.
Speaker 2: But today I want you to just think about this.
Speaker 2: Are you like Judas in this case where you're okay
Speaker 2: as long as you get something out of it, but
Speaker 2: you have a problem when you realize you don't get something,
Speaker 2: but only God gets the glory. When God wants to
Speaker 2: just use you as an instrument, but you don't get
Speaker 2: any benefit through that. Are you okay with that? You know?
Speaker 2: One other things I want to share and close in
Speaker 2: this episode is that over the years in ministry, I
Speaker 2: noticed that God has given me this gift of connecting people.
Speaker 2: A lot of times. Even two days ago, I was
Speaker 2: able to, by the grace of God, connect someone with
Speaker 2: another person and that was like a divine connection for them.
Speaker 2: It was like, you know, described as how I was
Speaker 2: like the Cobbo who was able to connect the Joseph
Speaker 2: with the Pharaoh. You know, that is how it was.
Speaker 2: And I was like, God, you know what, I'm happy
Speaker 2: about this connection. And I've connected so many people, Like
Speaker 2: there's so many connections, so many clients for people, so
Speaker 2: many things like that. God, I wish I would get
Speaker 2: a divine connection like that. I wish, you know, sometimes
Speaker 2: I feel like, oh, why should I do this for
Speaker 2: other people? Like I mean, I've done this so much.
Speaker 2: I'm not getting a divine connection myself. Nobody is thinking
Speaker 2: of it like that for me. Why am I not getting?
Speaker 2: But then I had to remind myself like this. Am
Speaker 2: I going to be someone who's only going to connect
Speaker 2: people as long as I get something in return? Or
Speaker 2: am I going to be someone who's like you know what,
Speaker 2: let God's name be glorified. If I'm not getting anything
Speaker 2: in return, it's okay. If Jesus is getting it, that's
Speaker 2: all that matters. Even if I'm in the negative spot
Speaker 2: or in the sense of I'm at a disadvantage or
Speaker 2: I'm not getting the credit or I'm not getting any benefit,
Speaker 2: even if I'm being crushed or anything, or even if
Speaker 2: the ministry is not growing, God, it's okay. As long
Speaker 2: as your name is being glorified through this, as long
Speaker 2: as somebody is receiving your word, as long as somebody
Speaker 2: is shining the light for your kingdom, building your kingdom
Speaker 2: in some way together with that collaboration, as long as
Speaker 2: somehow your name is being glorified, that's okay. Today, I
Speaker 2: want to ask you, are you going to be like Judas,
Speaker 2: who's only going to be like okay as long as
Speaker 2: you get something a benefit for yourself, Or are you
Speaker 2: going to be okay even if you don't get anything
Speaker 2: for yourself, but it's all going to give the glory
Speaker 2: to Jesus. Are you okay to be a channel or
Speaker 2: a medium for His Kingdom? Amen? God bless you.
