Stop the Spiral: How One Wrong Thought Leads to Deep Depression | Mental Health Part 3 | John Giftah
Tonight's Episode
Do you ever feel like your mind is a wilderness where one negative thought leads to another in a never-ending cycle? In Part 3 of our series on Elijah and Mental Health, John Giftah dives into 1 Kings 19 to explore what he calls the "Wilderness of the Mind." We look at how Elijah’s physical journey into the desert mirrored his internal struggle—a place where overthinking and magnifying problems led him to a point of total despair.
John shares a candid personal story about a season where a simple social media post led to three days of "fighting with God" over something that wasn't even real. This episode is a wake-up call to guard your thoughts and recognize the "burger effect" of mental layers that can trap you in depression. Learn how to break the spiral and find peace in the journey God has placed you on.

Speaker 1: Do you ever look around and think, Wow, the world
Speaker 1: is a crazy place and it just seems to get
Speaker 1: crazier and crazier. Ease your mind and take a break.
Speaker 1: This is Fuel for the Soul with John Gifta. We're
Speaker 1: a hub for inspirational Christian sermons, practical keys for Christian living,
Speaker 1: and Christian discussions and interviews. You'll be inspired to live
Speaker 1: the life that you were created for. Your host is
Speaker 1: a top ranking podcaster, best selling author, world record holder,
Speaker 1: aerospace engineer, life coach, evangelist, and founder of John Gifta International.
Speaker 1: Welcome to Fuel for the Soul with John Gifta.
Speaker 2: Hello everyone, Welcome to this edition of the Fuel for
Speaker 2: the Soul with John gift of podcast. All through this week,
Speaker 2: we're looking at various lessons that we can take away
Speaker 2: from One King Step nineteen revolving around the story of
Speaker 2: Elijah who's going into a deep depression. And we're also
Speaker 2: looking at various aspects to look at and learn from
Speaker 2: this so that we can have the best mental health
Speaker 2: a lifestyle that God has intended for us. I really
Speaker 2: want you to just hold on because this week we're
Speaker 2: going to be releasing a special episode that I recorded
Speaker 2: with Rinnie Jacob, where we did a deep dive so
Speaker 2: that we can have the kind of mental life, that
Speaker 2: mental health filled life the God has intended for us.
Speaker 2: So I want you to hold on for that. But
Speaker 2: today one of the things I want to talk about
Speaker 2: is how Elijah, when he gets this threat from Queen
Speaker 2: Jezebel that she wants to kill him, he rose and
Speaker 2: he ran for his life. And yesterday I told about
Speaker 2: how he not only ran, he left a servant behind.
Speaker 2: Like one of the aspects that you need to keep
Speaker 2: in mind when you are in that more of getting
Speaker 2: into depression or anxiety or panic attacks or allowing the
Speaker 2: mental state to go in a bad fashion is to
Speaker 2: go into isolation. And so I want you against that yesterday.
Speaker 2: But today one of the things I wanted to understand
Speaker 2: what happens is he himself traveled in verse four all right,
Speaker 2: a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat
Speaker 2: in the junipiter under the juniper tree, and asked the
Speaker 2: Lord that he might die, and he says, in our Lord,
Speaker 2: I don't want to live anymore. Now, I want you
Speaker 2: to understand this important aspect about Elanja going into a
Speaker 2: day's journey into the wilderness. Okay, there is an aspect
Speaker 2: of wilderness where I was reminded of this, this funny
Speaker 2: Scooby Doo reference where Fred and Daphne are going into
Speaker 2: a wilderness a desert. And I know it's may not
Speaker 2: be child appropriate statement, but I've heard this where I
Speaker 2: think Fred says to Daphne, you know what this wilderness
Speaker 2: reminds me of? And she says, I don't know, and
Speaker 2: she he says, you know, it reminds me of a woman.
Speaker 2: And she's like, what do you mean? And she says,
Speaker 2: it keeps going on and on and on and on,
Speaker 2: you know what I mean? Like, I know it's it's
Speaker 2: not a child appropriate for a kids show, but anyway,
Speaker 2: yus the message I wanted to understand, right, A wilderness
Speaker 2: is something that keeps going on and on. If you've
Speaker 2: been in a desert, if you've been in those icy places.
Speaker 2: Sometimes if you be whether it's a cold desert or
Speaker 2: a hot desert, it feels never ending. It keeps going
Speaker 2: on and on and on and on. Right, So Elijah
Speaker 2: spent the whole day going on and on and on
Speaker 2: into the wilderness, right, Like when he was giving this
Speaker 2: reference about like how wilderness is like a moment in
Speaker 2: the sense like this person is going on and on
Speaker 2: in the sense of overthinking and talking about this problem
Speaker 2: or this possibility. See, I want you to understand this, right.
Speaker 2: I hope you understand the filter village I'm talking about this.
Speaker 2: The point is when you're getting into that depression or
Speaker 2: when you're getting into the wrong mode of mental health status,
Speaker 2: what happens is you get to that place where your
Speaker 2: mind keeps going on and on and on and on,
Speaker 2: going from one thing, Oh, this is something that went wrong,
Speaker 2: and then from there you think about something else. That
Speaker 2: thought takes you to something else and makes you go
Speaker 2: from novel depression to deep depression to even wanting to
Speaker 2: end your life. Are you getting what I'm saying? Sometimes
Speaker 2: it gets me one wrong thought that you entertain, and
Speaker 2: you keep going into the wilderness of your mind, and
Speaker 2: that thought leads to another thought, and two thoughts getting together.
Speaker 2: It's like a burger effect, and then another one over it,
Speaker 2: another layer over it, and these things getting started up
Speaker 2: over and over. It's like you can get into such
Speaker 2: a place where you're completely consumed by that. See. I
Speaker 2: want you to pay attention to this guys, you need
Speaker 2: to pay attention to the thoughts because the Bible says
Speaker 2: that some man think it, so is he. Your life
Speaker 2: goes in the direction of your thoughts. That's why you
Speaker 2: need to guard your thoughts. Because when you get into
Speaker 2: this mode of like how Elijah went into this wilderness,
Speaker 2: the thoughts keep going on and on and on, one
Speaker 2: thought leading to another, and another leading to another. And
Speaker 2: when they all get amplified and magnified, what happens. Elijah
Speaker 2: goes to a place where he says, God, you know
Speaker 2: what everybody else has compromised, I'm the only one standing
Speaker 2: up for you. In fact, later when God, you know,
Speaker 2: speaks to Elijah, he says, you're not the only one man.
Speaker 2: There are seven thousand people here who are not bowed
Speaker 2: down to bail. There are seven thousand people on this
Speaker 2: on board with us. But Elijah was in that mode
Speaker 2: where he felt like I'm the only one going through this.
Speaker 2: See what I want you to understand is when you
Speaker 2: go into this mode of depression, or you get into
Speaker 2: that mode of constantly, you know, meditating on the problem,
Speaker 2: meditating on these negative thoughts, what happens is it gets
Speaker 2: to a place where it starts magnifying. You feel like
Speaker 2: the whole world is against you. You feel like nobody
Speaker 2: cares for you. You feel like nothing is working in
Speaker 2: your life, even if nineteen nine things are working, and
Speaker 2: that one problem that you're facing is not working, and
Speaker 2: you think that nothing is working in your life. That's
Speaker 2: what happened to Elijah. He had just seen the mighty
Speaker 2: move of God. He had just seen that God enabled
Speaker 2: him to bring fire from heaven. But he has seen
Speaker 2: the hand of God, the power of God, and now
Speaker 2: he gets a threat from the enemy, and he's running
Speaker 2: for his life. And at this point, what he's saying
Speaker 2: is he's over magnifying the problem and saying, you know what,
Speaker 2: I'm the only one here God. Everybody els has compromised
Speaker 2: and God had to correct him, and saying, you are
Speaker 2: magnifying the problem. You're not the only one. There are
Speaker 2: seven thousand people who have not bound to pay. Sometimes,
Speaker 2: you know, we over magnify the problems to a point
Speaker 2: where we don't realize this was actually not even a problem.
Speaker 2: What you think as a problem. You keep thinking and oh,
Speaker 2: I'm magnifying it's actually not even a problem. Today. I
Speaker 2: want you to guard your thoughts instead of allowing it
Speaker 2: to go into that wilderness. I've shared this many times
Speaker 2: with you guys, that last year was one of the
Speaker 2: hardest years for me because I had a huge financial
Speaker 2: loss and a job loss, followed my attacks on my health,
Speaker 2: followed by close those in the ministry, so many, so
Speaker 2: much of oppositions, so many things that happened, you know,
Speaker 2: certain things. I can't even share it publicly yet. So
Speaker 2: it was her hard season. And one of the things
Speaker 2: that I remember was I knew God was showing me
Speaker 2: visions that I'll be traveling and ministering. And by the
Speaker 2: grace of God, now those have started opening up for
Speaker 2: me to travel and minister. But I wanted to understand
Speaker 2: I was getting these visions, these promises from God, and
Speaker 2: my life was like completely stuck. Nothing was working on.
Speaker 2: People were against me, people were saying, oh, you made
Speaker 2: some mistake and God is punishing you now. Like it
Speaker 2: was so hard to convince anybody that God was leading me,
Speaker 2: that God was still showing me his visions and leading me,
Speaker 2: carrying me, teaching me. It was a very hard phase.
Speaker 2: And during that phase, I happened to scrawl on to
Speaker 2: social media and I saw three of my friends that
Speaker 2: I known through ministry, and they had posted a story
Speaker 2: or status saying, you know what, we are ministering in
Speaker 2: Singapore and pray for us, and that one status through
Speaker 2: me crazily. I'm being open with you, right, I'm being
Speaker 2: open with you. I was like, see, I was not
Speaker 2: jealous that day were traveling and ministering in Singapore. I
Speaker 2: was like, God, You're taking them to Singapore and I'm
Speaker 2: here stuck in Bangalore. You know, They're flying to Singapore
Speaker 2: and I'm sinking in my life like Titanic. You know.
Speaker 2: It was so bad. And I started fighting with God
Speaker 2: for three days, like I'm being honest with you, Like, God,
Speaker 2: how can this be the case? God, This doesn't make sense,
Speaker 2: Like why aren't you doing anything? I fought with God.
Speaker 2: I was so mad at God for three days. I
Speaker 2: went into this wilderness of like, you know, God is
Speaker 2: not opening doors for me, God is punishing me, or
Speaker 2: God is not answering my praise. I was so mad.
Speaker 2: I was fighting with God. At the same time. It
Speaker 2: was my relationship with God and I was going through
Speaker 2: all of these things turmoil on the inside. And one
Speaker 2: month later I happened to meet these guys and I
Speaker 2: met a how was your trip to Singapore and come
Speaker 2: to find out that they actually did not go to Singapore.
Speaker 2: They had just taken a photo in a prestigious small
Speaker 2: in Bangalore and put out a status as a prank
Speaker 2: saying that they were traveling to Singapore. And I was like, man,
Speaker 2: think about this. I fought with God. I had three
Speaker 2: days of sleepless nights and fights with God, so much
Speaker 2: of like a wilderness three like how elijahed spent an
Speaker 2: old day in the wilderness. I spent three days in
Speaker 2: the wilderness of her mind, like what is God doing?
Speaker 2: What is happening? And then I realized I fought with
Speaker 2: God for nothing. What I thought was not even the reality,
Speaker 2: like how Elijah thought He's the only one when God
Speaker 2: actually said that there was seven thousand others. When I
Speaker 2: was feeling like, why isn't God blessing me? And God
Speaker 2: is blessing others alone, and God was saying, listen, you're
Speaker 2: in a journey. They're in a journey. Can you come
Speaker 2: to a place of peace in the journey that I
Speaker 2: placed here? You see, guys, the reason I share these
Speaker 2: with you is telling you that you can be open
Speaker 2: with God about how you feel. I want you to
Speaker 2: be open, like if I feel upset, not again, like
Speaker 2: I said, even if I do feel jealous, I share
Speaker 2: that with God. So God I feel jealous, help me
Speaker 2: if you feel jealous, if you feel hurt, if you
Speaker 2: feel broken, be open with God. That's when he can
Speaker 2: heal you. But sometimes we fight with God over things.
Speaker 2: We get into that wilderness of the mind over things
Speaker 2: that are actually not even a problem. We just assume.
Speaker 2: We just think because we keep overthinking one thought or
Speaker 2: leads to another thought that leads to another thought, and
Speaker 2: one thought leads to five minutes of depression and then
Speaker 2: one hour, and then one day, and then five days,
Speaker 2: and some people for many months, and sadly for some
Speaker 2: many years. Don't let that be you today. I want
Speaker 2: to pray over you that if you're in that wilderness
Speaker 2: of depression in your mind, a wilderness of wrong thought process,
Speaker 2: a wilderness of world win in your mind that's affecting
Speaker 2: you where you're not in that mental state that you
Speaker 2: need to be. I pray in Jesus' name that you
Speaker 2: will receive the breakthrough, that you will see the deliverance
Speaker 2: in your mind, and you will be set free in
Speaker 2: Jesus name really challenge you to leave a comment and
Speaker 2: shat this with someone and I will see you backwy soon.
Speaker 2: God bless you.
